Milarepa Cave
To understand the significance of Milarepa Cave in Manang, you have to go through the biography of Saint Milarepa, who was a singer, a poet, a saint, and an enlightened figure in Tibetan Buddhism. At his mother’s urging, Milarepa learned black magic and exacted a terrible revenge, causing the death of many through sorcery. He turned his path from sin to purification. For this, he became a student of the great Tibetan master Marpa the Translator, a strict and powerful teacher who put Milarepa through years of physically grueling trials before giving him full teachings.
After receiving the full transmission of teachings, Saint Milarepa dedicated himself to meditation in the caves of Tibet and Nepal. Milarepa Cave in Manang is one of the caves where he sat for intense meditation. He sat in the cave, eating only raw nettle spinach and wearing only a thin cotton cloth (hence the name “Repa”, or cotton-clad one).
