Will Mt. Everest Gets a New Height?

The tallest peak in the universe, Mt. Everest was measured 8848 meters by Sir George Everest. After 65 years of the first Everest expedition by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary, Nepal government is set to measure the height of Mount Everest again as many experts are guessing that during the Gurkha earthquake in 2015, the height has been reduced by 3 centimeters.

The government of New Zealand will provide the technical assistance led by the geological survey expert Dr. Chris Piersion. The first step of planning has been proceeding according to the Embassy of New Zealand in India.

Two types of measuring means will be implemented. One is the traditional measuring way that was applied by George Everest and another is Modern Global Positioning System Receiver that will be taken to the summit of Mt. Everest and measured.

Mt. Everest is located at the border part of Nepal to Tibet, in the eastern region (Khumbu) of Nepal. It is surrounded by several picturesque Himalayan peaks, including Mt.Makalu, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and others. Hundreds of climbers set their records climbing this most popular peak in the world. Even the Everest base camp trekking is the most popular adventure trekking in Nepal.
