It was 1953 May 29, when Tenzing Norgay Sherpa from Nepal and Edmund Hillary from New Zealand became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of the world's tallest peak, MT. Everest (8848 meters). They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt. The day is celebrated with memorial events, processions, and special events in Kathmandu and the Everest region.
